Kendall Lake, member of the Order of the Round Table, is sent to find out why Amy Deland sees phantoms in her photographs. The people who have the shadow surround them on the photograph end up dying fairly quickly. Amy doesn’t know if she is causing the people to die or if she is somehow seeing the future.

Kendall and Amy are presented in broad brush strokes and their relationship heats up incredibly quickly – as in you blink and they are love. I didn’t think the love scene was necessary as it added little to the overall plot and more build-up was needed to make it plausible. I wish there was a follow up full novel exploring their married life so we can see these two in greater detail. A few familiar faces from Steam & Sorcery pop up to help solve the mystery.

There was an awful lot crammed into this novella. It is a shame it wasn’t longer so the relationship could develop at a slower pace and we could have a few more complications before the climax. I wanted to know the reasons behind the villain’s actions (in more than a paragraph or two) and how they developed their skill.

I enjoyed the book but was left a bit unsatisfied because there was so much that wasn’t addressed.
