Sidekick Gnash-up: Pirate vs Oberon

Grrr

Today we have a battle between two popular dogs that happen to be sidekicks for some pretty special characters. Pirate, as you might know, is demon slayer Lizzie Brown’s talking Jack Russell Terrier (Angie Fox’s Demon Slayer series). Oberon is of course Atticus the Druid’s talking Irish Wolfhound (The Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne).

Pirate is a hyperactive dog that is obsessed with food and suffers serious withdrawal pangs if Lizzie isn’t around. Over the series, Pirate has matured and since he found a dragon egg in A Tale of Two Demon Slayers, he now has his very own dragon pet…named Flappy. He’s smart enough to hide Flappy from Lizzie and realise that she doesn’t always have treats for him when she says she does. The only problem is that he has a tendency to lose control of his bladder at the slightest hint of danger.

Oberon is fairly shall we say ‘regular’ and willing to leave such generous deposits on the porch of Atticus’ nosy neighbour. He loves French poodles, is obsessed with Genghis Khan and can pull movie references out of thin air. Oberon even has his own twitter page https://twitter.com/IrishOberon. I think my favourite tweet would have to be “all your bacon are belong to me”.  He and Atticus can communicate telepathically ever since Atticus taught him English. The fact that Atticus can shape-shift into a hound and hunt alongside Oberon, strengthens their bond.

When it comes to sidekicks, I think Oberon trumps Pirate. Without Oberon, Atticus would be all alone (at least until Granuaile signs on).  I imagine that apathy would be one of the biggest dangers for someone who is as long lived as Atticus. Introducing new things to Oberon and explaining how the world works keeps Atticus active, you know apart from all the people and gods that are trying to kill him. Lizzie on the other hand has other friends that can fill this void. Pirate is her pet whereas Oberon is Atticus’ companion.
