Feature & Follow: #175 Adaptation better than book

Feature & Follow is hosted by TWO hosts, Parajunkee of Parajunkee’s View and Alison of Alison Can Read. Each host will have their own Feature Blog and this way it’ll allow us to show off more new blogs! This week’s question is…

Are there any book to movie/tv adaptations where you think the latter is better than the former?

I’m not a massive fan of book adaptations because the actors or the directing style are often different from how I imagined them. There is one tv show however than I think exceeds the books and that is True Blood seasons 1-4. It dials the cheese factor up to maximum and I relished the campy plot lines. The Sookie Stackhouse books have always been really uneven for me with some absolutely nailing it and others leaving me decidedly ‘meh’ so I approached True Blood with some trepidation. Turns out I was partially correct – True Blood got crazier than usual in season five so we parted ways but the first four seasons are really well executed with my favourite being the one where Eric loses his memory.

  1. Jessica @ a GREAT read

I enjoy watching True Blood, but at times I am miffed with all the changes they made. I know the books tend to be hit or miss for people but I liked them–not love, but like! They were one of my first “Adult” series I read.

    • I didn’t mind many of the changes but Tara just annoyed the heck out of me. Whenever I saw her on the screen, I couldn’t help reminding her that she was killed off in the books so she should pick up her game.

  2. I have only read a couple to Sookie books, but I realized real quick when I watched the first couple episodes of True blood that they were not going to be the same..especially when one person who is still in the show got killed in the first book..ahem. So I just take them for what they are worth..a book and a tv show. 🙂

    • There is an awful lot of violence and sex so if that kind of gratuity isn’t your thing, then I think you might want to stick to the books which are much tamer.

  3. I tried watching True Blood but it was a little too violent for me, but having read the first Sookie Stackhouse book I thought the tv show was much darker.

    Have a great weekend!

    • In the first episode my eyebrows were raised so high that they practically disappeared into my hairline as I was expecting a cozy paranormal series. I adjusted and enjoyed the crazy plot lines though.
