Heads Up: HarperCollins commissioning Austen re-writes

HarperCollins is commissioning authors to do the seemingly impossible, re-write Jane Austen’s masterpieces. Alexander McCall Smith is the latest to be announced and he’s tackling Emma, Val McDermid is re-writing Northanger Abbey, Joanne Trollop’s is working on Sense & Sensibility and Curtis Sittenfield got the pick of the crop, Pride & Prejudice. On the one hand I’m excited and on the other all I can think is ‘please, please don’t stuff it up’.

    • I don’t honestly know how you can improve on P&P or Darcy for that matter but I will be very interested to check out the McDermid version of the gothic Northanger Abbey.

    • The problem is that I have yet to see anyone pull it off without being priggish or boring. Austen had such a light touch with her writing. Never mind.
