Inspired by: Ari from Armageddon Rules by J. C. Nelson because she’s a princess with attitude and the bead ends look a little like crowns. There is a moment where she wears a pink frilly tracksuit “like a cone of shame” which gave me the idea in the first place.

Inspired by: Jill Shalvis’s It’s In His Kiss. Becca’s love of the ocean is summed up pretty eloquently with these lines…”You’re perfect,” she said to the Pacific Ocean, munching on the ranch-flavoured popcorn she’ bought from the pier. “So perfect that I’d marry you and have your babies, if I hadn’t just promised myself to this popcorn.”
Inspired by: Nuri Vittachi’s The Feng Shui Detective. The detective CF Wong is a feng shui master who gets involved in some fairly unusual and tricky crimes. His sidekick, Joyce, is a fairly well meaning Aussie who rubs Wong the wrong way with her brash nature.
Inspired by: Martha C. Lawrence’s Murder in Scorpio which I first read sixteen years ago and keep coming back to. My colour choices reflect the cover.
Inspired by: Christine Feehan’s Water Bound. Rikki rescues Lev when they get swept up in a tsunami which is described as “a solid wall of water rising up out of the sea like a monstrous tsunami, a wave beyond anything she had witnessed”.
Inspired by: Kristen Ashley’s Rock Chick series. Big hoops = badass but can also equal bogan.
Inspired by: Victoria Laurie’s Abbey Cooper, Psychic Eye. When we are first introduced to Abbey, she tells us that “People are like ice cream. Take me, for instance. You’d think that by my profession alone – professional psychic – I’d be a ringer for Nutty Coconut, but the reality is that I’m far more like vanilla – consistent, a little bland, missintg some hot fudge. The exception, of course, is my rather unique ability to predict the future…”
